The Caribbean Adage “An ounce of Prevention is better than a pound of Cure” is a very apt phrase in the field of Labour and Employment Relations. Many an explosive (and costly) issue in the workplace, could well be avoided if Executive Management, Supervisors, Shop Stewards/Union Delegates and Human Resource teams are consistently exposed to appropriate information related to labour law, industrial relations and practice. By becoming more aware and gaining insight into the “why” and the “how” of these provisions, stakeholders become better equipped to operate in more holistic and harmonious ways to maximize their business’ potential. This is true in both non-unionized as well as unionized environments, with the latter being extremely important, where there is the added dimension of a negotiated Collective Labour Agreement at play.
